. i think if you listen to the comments of joe biden he's saying we shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good here. clearly he's envisioning a system where they could pass some of these things in separate measures. universal background checks definitely has a more likely chance of passing up on capitol hill than, say, the assault weapons ban. of course, some of the executive actions which will go into effect today include things like allowing the military -- the medical establishment of the federal government to study gun violence. that's something they've been prohibited to do before to advocate for gun violence. the president saying he's not asking them to advocate. he's just asking them to study the root causes and tabulate gun violence incidents so scientists can learn a little bit more about why some of these mass assaults happen and who it is who's doing them. >> the president's relationship is likely to grow a bit more contentious as a result of all this, eamon. what sort of impact can we expect on the debt ceiling negotiations? >> reporter: well, clearly, ever

it and controlling guns is the issue. joe biden meeting house democrats, laying out the measures the white house wants with or without congress. reportedly there are 19 executive actions for the president to impose, unilaterally. issue an executive order in congress is bypassed. they reportedly include universal background checks, banning high capacity magazine chips and an assault weapons ban, all of that is possible. that's the federal level. at the state level, new york has already moved. a bill is expected to pass today that is being called the toughest gun control law in the country. the proposals call for tougher assault weapons ban and restrictions of sales on guns and ammunition and yes, tougher background checks, all of this appears to be in favor with a small majority of voters. a new washington post, abc news poll, shows 52% more likely to back some kind of gun control after the shootings in newtown, connecticut. a lot of people still agree with the n.r.a. another poll shows 55% shows armed guards in schools. 42% oppose that. president obama will unveil his full recommendations on gun

have a seat. good afternoon, everybody. let me begin by thanks our vice president, joe biden. for your dedication, joe, to this issue. for bringing so many different voices to the table. because while reducing gun violence is a complicated challenge, protecting our children from harm shouldn't be a divisive one. over the month since the tragedy in newtown, we've heard from so many. and obviously none have affected us more than a families of those gorgeous children and their teachers and guardians who were lost. so we're grateful to all of you for taking the time to be here and recognizing that we honor their memories in part by doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again. but we also heard from some unexpected people. in particular, i started getting a lot of letters from kids. four of them are here today. grant frits, julia stokes, hannah zeha and tasia good. they're pretty representative of some of the messages i got. these are some pretty smart letters from some pretty smart young people. hennah, a third grader. you can go ahead and wave, hennah. that's you. hennah
